Individual events

Principles of Business Administration Events (First Year Only)
DECA’s Principles of Business Administration Events measure the student’s proficiency in those knowledge and skills identified by career practitioners as common academic and technical content across marketing, finance, hospitality, and business management and administration. The Principles of Business Administration Events are designed for first-year DECA members who are enrolled in introductory-level principles of marketing/business courses. The event includes a roleplay and a 100 question exam, each of which is weighted as 50% of the student's final score. Students have 10 minutes to prepare and 10 minutes to present to a judge for a roleplay. 

Principles of Business Management & Administration  (PBM)
  • The business situation will use language associated with careers in Administrative Services, Business Information Management, General Management, Human Resources Management, and Operations Management.

Principles of Finance (PFN)
  • The business situation will use language associated with careers in Accounting, Banking Services, Business Finance, Insurance and Securities, and Investments.

Principles of Hospitality & Tourism  (PHT)
  • The business situation will use language associated with careers in Hotels, Restaurants, and Tourism and Travel.

Principles of Marketing  (PMK)
  • The business situation will use language associated with careers in Marketing Communications, Marketing Management, Marketing Research, Merchandising and Professional Selling.

Individual Series Events
Individual Series Events are done alone and consist of a test and two role plays; each equating to 1/3 of your overall score.  Individual role plays are typically shorter in nature and consist of 5 Performance Indicators on the rubric.  Students have 10 minutes to read over their role play & 10 minutes with a judge to present their ideas.

Accounting Applications Series  (ACT)                                                                                            Finance Exam
  • Stu­dents will be challenged to perform management functions and tasks focusing on the application of financial data to business planning, including collection and organization of data, development and use of reports, and analysis of data to make business decisions.  Roles in these events are those of supervisors, managers or entrepreneurs.

Apparel and Accessories Marketing Series  (AAM)                                                                           Marketing Exam
  • Students will be challenged to perform marketing and management functions and tasks in retail establishments, wholesale establishments and/or manufacturing firms primarily engaged in the marketing of clothing and related articles for personal wear and adornment. Roles in these events are those of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

 Automotive Services Marketing Series  (ASM)                                                                              Marketing Exam
  • Students will be challenged to perform marketing and management functions and tasks related to auto dealers, service stations and related businesses or auto parts stores. Roles in these events are those of customers, employees, supervisors, managers and entrepre­neurs.
 
Business Finance Series  (BFS)                                                                                                    
Finance Exam
  • Students will be challenged to perform management functions and tasks focusing on high-level financial and business planning, including the collection and organization of data, development, and use of reports, and analysis of data to make business decisions. Roles in these events are those of customers, employees, supervisors, and managers.

Business Services Marketing Series  (BSM)                                                                                    Marketing Exam
  • The student is given a description of a specific situation that measures skills, knowledge and attitudes in business services marketing. Students will be challenged to perform market­ing functions and tasks involved in providing services to businesses on a fee or contract basis or providing services to consumers. Roles in these events are those of customers, employees, supervisors, managers and entrepreneurs. 

 Food Marketing Series  (FMS)                                                                                                    Marketing Exam
  • Students will be challenged to perform marketing and management functions and tasks in retail establishments, wholesale establishments and manufacturing firms resulting in the sale of food. Roles in these events are those of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

Hotel and Lodging Management Series  (HLM)                                                                              Hospitality Exam
  • Students will be challenged to perform marketing and management functions and tasks in hotels, motels, lodging services, convention services, and food and beverage services. Roles in these events are those of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

 Human Resources Management Series  (HRM)                                                                             Business Exam
  • Students will be challenged to perform management functions and tasks focusing on staffing, recruitment, selection, training, performance appraisal, compensation and safety training. 

 Marketing Communication Series  (MMS)                                                                                    Marketing Exam
  • The student is given a description of a specific situation that measures skills, knowledge and attitudes in marketing communications and marketing functions and tasks that inform, persuade, or remind a target market of ideas, experiences, goods or services.
 
Quick Serve Restaurant Management Series  (QSRM)                                                                Hospitality Exam
  • Students will be challenged to per­form marketing and management functions and tasks in retail establishments, wholesale establishments and manufacturing firms primarily engaged in the quick-serve restaurant industry. Roles in these events are those of customers, employees, supervisors, managers and entrepreneurs.

Restaurant and Food Service Management Series  (RFSM)                                                         Hospitality Exam
  • Students will be challenged to perform marketing and management functions and tasks in a full-service restaurant or a food-service business. Roles in these events are those of supervisors, managers and entrepreneurs.

 Retail Merchandising Series  (RMS)                                                                                        Marketing Exam
  • Students will be challenged to perform marketing and man­agement functions and tasks that can be applied in any retail establishment. Roles in these events are those of customers, employees, supervisors and managers.

 Sports and Entertainment Marketing Series  (SEM)                                                                    Marketing Exam
  • Students will be challenged to per­form marketing and management functions and tasks related to amateur or professional sports or sporting events, entertainment or entertainment events, selling or renting of supplies and equipment (other than vehicles) used for recreational or sporting purposes, products and services related to hobbies or cultural events, or businesses primarily engaged in satisfying the desire to make productive or enjoyable use of lei­sure time. Roles in these events are those of supervisors and managers.

Personal Financial Literacy
DECA’s Personal Financial Literacy Event measures the personal finance knowledge and skills that K-12 students should possess. The Personal Financial Literacy Event is designed to measure the student’s ability to apply reliable information and systematic decision making to personal financial decisions. The Personal Financial Literacy Event is designed for DECA members who are enrolled in personal finance and financial literacy courses.
  • Personal Financial Literacy (PFL)                                                                    Financial Literacy Exam
    Students will be assessed on their knowledge of areas such as: financial responsibility and decision making, income and careers, planning and money management, credit and debt, risk management and insurance, and saving and investing.
